Memories 1944-1945
The siege of Budapest started in December of 1944. We lived in an apartment building with eight other families, who the day after Christmas of 1944 moved into the cellar of our building. Each family had a storage cubicle, which became the living space for the next two months. The laundry room became the community room for cooking, playing, etc., with the only lantern. The air-raid shelter was the bedroom for the children and lat er the hideout from the Russian soldiers, who arrived at our building February 9, 1945. The Russians took the men to use them to take ammunition to houses close to the German occupiers. My own father was the only one from our building to be killed doing this task. The green blanket followed him to the grave. The siege was over February 14th.
